Let’s talk trash

The environment is not a separate entity that we can lock out of our air conditioned homes. What we throw away, comes back to us, eventually.

When we ‘clean up’ our houses and throw all the waste into one nice big black bag-What happens to this waste?

Let’s break down the waste we generate into four categories:

Wet Waste, Dry and Recyclable waste, Rejects and E-Waste.

Wet Waste

The wet waste that could have been composted, but is thrown away along with other waste will not biodegrade in landfills; instead it would give out methane, which is even more poisonous than CO2.

Avoid food wastage. Try and compost wet waste and donate excess food from parties.

Dry and Recyclable Waste

Recyclable waste like paper, glass and recyclable plastics, when thrown away with other waste, might become non-recyclable if they get soiled and greased. The plastic degrades into micro- plastics and other dangerous compounds. This contaminates ground water, and also finds its way to the food we consume. Waste dumped in landfills under heaps of waste cannot biodegrade because of lack of moisture and oxygen. It is also a storehouse of bacteria and virus that affects people working in landfills.
A large chunk of this waste also finds its way to the oceans and destroys our marine life.

We are slowly running out of space to dump our waste. A lot of it is burnt which in turn produces toxic gases.

E-Waste

E-Waste management is one of the most critical waste issues. Improper disposal can cause serious damage to our health and environment. Refer to this link to know more.

How can we make a difference?

Recycling is a complicated process. Before resorting to recycling, we should reduce our consumption of plastic products, refuse single-use plastics, buy products that are packaging-free/plastic-free, and reuse and re-purpose what we have. Recycling Tips.
