How to celebrate an eco-friendly festival?

With a lot of festivities round the corner, let’s try to make some environment friendly and sustainable choices. Here are a few things that we could keep in mind this festive season:

  • Go Environment friendly with re-usables: Avoid having drinks/food that are served in use and throw paper (lined with plastic), plastic or Styrofoam cups and plates. Choose reusable containers instead and say no to single use plastics. This goes a long way in reducing the amount of waste we generate.
  • Carry your own water bottle to avoid buying plastic water bottles. Carrying reusable water bottles drastically reduces the huge amount of buying water bottles we buy.
  • Say no to carry bags. Carry a reusable shopping bag to avoid buying things in plastic bags. Plastic bags are one of the major sources of plastic pollution. A cloth bag can last you years and years and are an environment friendly alternative to the huge amount of plastic bags we end up using. You can also use your denims and old clothes/t-shirts to make bags. win-win!
  • Avoid food wastage. Give away excess food. The majority of waste we generate is usually food. We can use food waste as a compost to grow our own food.
  • Prefer sweets made at home and local shops instead of packaged items. Sweets made at home and local shops are an environment friendly and healthier option. They come without a plastic package and they don’t contain un-pronounceable ingredients and preservatives.
  • Support local businesses and artisans, like local food, handcrafted décor, handloom clothing etc. When we turn back to our tradition for things like food, fashion, decor, furniture, utensils etc., we would realize they are truly sustainable and environment friendly as opposed to some modern inventions that are filled with non eco-friendly and plastic items.
  • Do not buy on impulse. Let’s try to reduce and reuse! We can do some service to the environment just by limiting our consumption of things we don’t really require, buy reusing and re-purposing things like our parents and grandparents did.

Above all, let’s find happiness in experiences, and spreading love and joy; instead of materialistic things.
