Closing the loop with Saahas Zero Waste!

The waste you throw away everyday need not rot in the landfill, for the next hundred, thousand or million years? Did you know most of them can be recycled and repurposed?

In fact, the concept of Circular Economy implies that no waste is sent to the landfill. Every resource must be used to its maximum potential through its recovery post disposal. A pioneer in this field of waste management is Saahas Zero Waste (SZW).

A Circular Economy?

SZW operates in the principle of a circular economy. While SZW started off with managing 5 tons of waste per day in a sustainable manner, they currently manage about 35 tons of waste per day and divert it away from the landfill to the right end destinations.

According to Saahas, 90% of the waste we generate can be repurposed/recycled to ensure maximum resource recovery.

Waste collection and recycling:

SZW mainly partners with bulk waste generators and help them achieve zero waste to landfills.

After a thorough segregation of dry and wet waste; the wet waste is composted and the dry waste is sent to their Material Recovery Facility. Here it is sorted into 14-17 different categories, and each category is sent out to the right destination for recycling.

SZW manufactures t-shirts, laptop bags, caps, all kinds of stationery items, chip-boards for furniture and roofing materials out of recycled material!

Reduce your carbon footprint with these articles made of recycled material!
SZW ensures the quality of t-shirts and bags aren't compromised. The tshirts are made of breathable fabrics, and the bags are durable.

Tetra Paks Recycling

Apart from the conventional recycling, SZW is also known for recycling Tetra Pak cartons. Tetra Pak cartons comprises paper, plastic and aluminium. They are recycled to make Chip-boards, that can be used to make furniture. The Polythene and Aluminium from the Tetra Paks are used to make Roofing sheets, as shown above.

Extended Producer Responsibility

SZW works with manufactures under the Extended Producer Responsibility program, wherein, through reverse logistics, they collect and aggregate post consumer material and send it out for recycling.

SZW currently works with companies like Nestle, HUL and  HCCB to recover post-consumer waste such as MLPs, HDPE & PET bottles, to ensure they are managed in a sustainable manner

KASA RASA: Waste segregation at Community collection centres

Through these centres, SZW manages waste at the source and segregates the waste in their collection centres. The kitchen waste is composted in tanks, the recyclable material is sent to appropriate recycling centres and the non-recyclable material is sent to cement factories for coprocessing. These centres also provide dignified livelihood for waste workers. They handle close to 1-2.5 tons of waste per day.

Dry waste can be dropped at the KASA RASA centres, and e-waste can be dropped in their office in BTM Layout, Bengaluru.

SZW currently operates in Bangalore, Chennai and Goa.

Sahaas bagged the first prize in the 3R Excellence Awards for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the National Level Category, at the 8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and Pacific. This award has been given for exemplary work in the area of Waste Management through 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).

The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) has selected Saahas Zero Waste to receive the Swachh Best Practice Award for their Zero Waste program for Bulk Generators as a part of Swachh Survekshan 2018. The award was presented to SZW’s CEO, Wilma Rodrigues by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 23rd June 2018.
